The
Elk Horn Civil War Event was started in 2002. It was started in conjunction with
the Danish Immigrant Museum to commemorate Danish Independence Day in June. The
first event was to commemorate the famous battle of Chickamauga and the stand of
the 15th Wisconsin commanded by Colonel Hegs, which involved a Scandinavian unit
from Wisconsin of which Danish Immigrants were part of. This event has been held
each year since with other battles involving Scandinavian immigrants. The event
is held over a weekend starting on a Friday evening and ending after the final battle
re-enactment on Sunday. The event has a campsite next to the battle grounds located
on the site of the original Lutheran Foster Home. The site is wooded and gives an
authentic look to the encampment for the armies of the North and South. All participants
are given a bounty for showing up and distribution of powder for participation in
the event.
We
are trying to focus on events that will bring more visitors into the camp to meet
with the re-enactors. We will have a blacksmith, a rope maker, a wheelwright and
a variety of other crafts people in camp to help with the living history.
Along with some other points of interest for attendees are a mortar competition
and horseback shooting contest.
After the past 2006 event, we will be going to host this event every 2 years to
insure we can maintain a quality event for all. We wish to thank all of the previous
attendees who have participated and look forward to your continued participation
along with welcoming new participants as well.
It is my personnel wish and goal to insure this event is a quality event for all
who come. I welcome any comments you may have.
Please come join us for a fun filled and historical event this year and in the coming
years.
